I have a little different setup but still using an MD1000.
Before:
hdparm -t /dev/sdb
/dev/sdb:
Timing buffered disk reads: 632 MB in 3.00 seconds = 210.50 MB/sec

2nd:
blockdev --setra 8192 /dev/sdb
hdparm -t /dev/sdb
/dev/sdb:
Timing buffered disk reads: 1162 MB in 3.01 seconds = 386.28 MB/sec

3rd:
blockdev --setra 16384 /dev/sdb
humboldt CHEMENG # hdparm -t /dev/sdb
/dev/sdb:
Timing buffered disk reads: 1312 MB in 3.00 seconds = 437.06 MB/sec

I am confused what you mean by setting the best stripe size (the last bullet), is that actually on the controller?

Rollerblade said the shell shape was changed. Especially the V cut for more flexibility.

So far, I didn't test myself, so I can't check it.
